This is the 4th time in a year that I will speak on the topic of Christian Community. I don’t want to sound redundant but I really feel the need of drilling in deep our core values into our community’s heart. Especially given the fact that most mega and wanna-be mega churches today are real heavy on programs. If you think about it, the program heavy church is a by product of American consumerism. While I don’t have nothing against consumerism, I do see the problem of reducing the church of Jesus to that. The church that has the most variety and the most attractive programs wins. The reason for it is that people attend churches much like they shop. They go to “get something out of it”, to network and, to be entertained literally, to consume. There’s no sense of mission and much less of community. In fact, community life nowadays is much like the consumer relationship one has around a product (Mary Kay, Tuper-ware, Herba-life and many others). Think abou it. It’s true. It doesn’t look at all like the way the first Christians were encouraged to live out their faith.
For sure I’ll preach about community the 5th, 6th, 20th time, I bet it will still not surpass the times I preach the gospel. Uhhh… every week.
